Re: The Road to Abstinence.

Winker - how much I can relate to how you used to think non drinkers were staid & boring. I met up with an old friend recently and she was genuinely dissappointed that I was not drinking. She said she enjoyed how wasted I got.

Re: The Road to Abstinence.

I think when you stop drinking you hold a mirror up to others peoples drinking. On some levels I was relieved to be 'let go' by some of my drinking buddies. It would have made giving up so much harder had they not. Its mixed blessing. PandaGirl - excellent post. ProudMum - I often spend weeks not po...

Hi Max, Cut yourself some slack about last night. It is possible to go to golf and not drink. It may be hard but give it a try. Going forward perhaps you could try new hobbies and interests that don't have the associated triggers. I've even taken up clay pigeon shooting. Random I know but there is n...

Re: The Road to Abstinence.

Joop wrote, For some reason I have been feeling insecure about everything this week. And I do not like it one bit. Its the old me, and if I feel insecure, jealous and bitter - I will want to drink to suppress these feelings. I realise this was a big key in my drinking. Those lines really resonated w...

Re: SOS - Post here if you need help (No General Chat Please

Max, I used to feel that I had to drink before I could do so many things. The more I drank and the longer I drank the worse it got. I could never get through a social occasion without alcohol. Now I can spend a whole evening out without a drop and actually prefer it. Who knew that could happen?!!! A...

Re: The Road to Abstinence.

REMF I can really relate to your post about 'excuses'. Someone recently said to me that they don't drink and then made a joke that usually when he reveals this, there is the assumption that he his is a 'card carrying member of AA'. I literally flinched when he said it. It was a throw away comment b...

Re: The Wobble Board

I suppose where I'm coming from is that I have this fear that if I slip now after all this time, I will give up completely. However when I see other people get back in the saddle it gives me hope.

Re: The Wobble Board

Pan, I too draw strength from other peoples wobbles; that's why it's so important to share them - they fortify tye rest of us. I too felt some of your frustration at hearing about slips when I first started. But Jo's hit the nail on the head when she talked about showing ourselves compassion. It's i...

Re: The Wobble Board

Failure is a necessary component of success. Put another way, all those who have succeeded have tried and failed, tried and failed again, and then dusted themselves off and tried yet again. Treat each failure as a lesson and each period of abstinence as time under your belt that the EAF can never to...

Re: The Road to Abstinence.

mkj,

I think your analogy is a good one. Giving up alcohol does involve a grieving process.

Re: The Road to Abstinence

I have an addiction to wanting everything achieved yesterday. When drinking it wasn't enough to a couple of drinks or ten drinks. I was always chasing the greater and better and more fulfilling high and drinking experience. No amount was ever enough (until of course I had drunk enough to fall asleep...

Re: The Road to Abstinence

Cobra Zero is a really fab alternative. I even like non alcoholic wine, despite never having enjoyed alcoholic wine. Merry Christmas everyone! Chriscole, I get what you mean totally. I hate the well done's and watchful eyes of others. Only my OH and you folks don't make me feel icky about giving up ...
