Re: New Members - Please Introduce Yourself Here

Hi all, Its good to be back. Thanks for all your messages of support from those who knew me and from those who have joined the forum sine I left. It means a lot, it really does. Well I thought yesterday went well. No alcohol all day or last night. I cheated a bit, was so tired I went to bed at 6.00p...

Re: New Members - Please Introduce Yourself Here

Hi all, Its Mike back again. I fell off the wagon a few years ago and now my liver is groaning. Today will be my first day without alcohol for a long time. I have Diazepam to help me and I shall be going to an AA meeting tonight, and every night for a week or for as long as it takes. I know AA is no...

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol

And this is another thing I wanted to warn you about. It's nothing to do with alcohol but watch out for the anti-oxidant CoQ10 in any of its guises. It's very big in the States, but you need to be aware it interferes with the coagulation pathway in the blood. If you are already on blood thinners it ...

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol

Re Statins, There has been a recent resurgence of support in the medical profession for Statins, the drugs that lower your cholesterol and protect you from heart attacks and strokes. You have probably heard about it in the media. It has now been decided that the benefits outweigh the side effects an...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hey, No posts on this thread between Feb and Aug of this year. I'm slightly surprised because although religion doesn't have too much of a following right now, spirituality is about so much more. Where are the posts about meditation, yoga, the spiritual power of music and dancing etc.? And do you ne...

Re: Music, movies and tv

Hi all, Haven't been on the forum for ages. I just popped in to say check out Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman on 'Song (The Ballad Book)', their latest CD. I bought it because I fortunately have tickets to see them live later on this week. The album is great, unusually lyrical for jazz, maybe because i...

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol

Hi all, I used to be a regular contributor to this forum. Thought I'd report in to tell you about a recent experience. I have just returned home following a week spent as an in patient at the local district general hospital. I am a retired doctor and it is always a salutary experience to be on the r...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi Tink, Lovely to find you still on this thread. Hope all is going well for you. I retired completely 2 years ago and searched around for something useful to do. I was turned down for a part time admin job with the local churches, and wasn't suitable in some way as a resident volunteer at a Catholi...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

HI all, In the light of Dave's recent post I looked up my 10th Feb post which was in part a reply to Danny's question about Jesus praying and whether he instructed the disciples how to pray. I missed mentioning that he taught them the Our Father, Jesus himself prayed long and hard in the Garden of G...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi thewho and hi all, We had the transfiguration sermon on Sunday too, or was it the Sunday before ? I think last Sunday the sermon was on the Woman taken in Adultery. I believe it was Peter who suggested that the disciples build three tabernacles for Jesus, Moses and Elijah, when the word of God pr...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Lovely post Tink. You really opened your heart with that one, I enjoyed it immensely. We are approaching Lent in the Church calendar. Last Sunday was the fourth Sunday before Lent. My Church has set up evening meetings with other C of E Churches in the area, but I have not signed up for them. Why ? ...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi Danny, I am no authority on scriptural matters but I do think about them a lot. However I had never considered your particular question before. You are quite right. Nowhere in the Lord's Prayer are thanks expressed to God. Perhaps this was meant to be a formula around which to construct our praye...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi all, Some great posts on here about prayer, and about alcohol. The latter may be still part of our problem, or not. Do we pray for others or for ourselves ? As far as my Church is concerned, prayers should be about the Church, the world and about others, in that order. I don't pray for myself. If...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi again Shoshi, I didn't realise you were Jewish or I would have used a different metaphore. One of my greatest friends is Jewish, we are venturing to NYC this summer to his son's wedding. His parents fled Austria before the outbreak of WW II and settled in England. His father died young but we got...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi shoshy, That's a tough one. I know that's why some of the Jews destined for death in the concentration camps lost their faith. They believed they were Gods chosen people but in this case they had been selected for execution by Hitler's regime. I believe that all prayers work, but not necessarily ...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi Tink, and Hi everyone, Thanks so much for your supportive responses. My wife said today, 'They don't believe so why are we praying for them ?'' I explained it doesn't matter whether you are a believer or not, the prayers still work. It doesn't matter in the slightest. Even an unbeliever's prayers...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi Tink, I'm not sure you will like the book. You have a very strong faith founded on a Catholic upbringing and I think you may find it blasphemous. In fact there is no doubt that the theme of the book is clearly blasphemous as it retells the story of Jesus by introducing an additional central chara...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi all, Would anyone like a copy of Philip Pullman's book 'The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ' ? I was given it for Christmas, and I already have it and have read it. It's a tongue in cheek work of fiction and not to be taken seriously, but it is entertaining and it makes you think. If anyo...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi all, I haven't posted for ages but here is an update. My Rome pilgrimage was as interesting as ever if not a tad repetitive. The only other repeat attender was an Anglican Bishop from the States whom I met last year. He gave up after only 2 days but I believe he was passing through Rome at the ti...

Re: The Spirituality Connection

Hi 64Turtles, Thanks for your good wishes for the pilgrimage. I think of myself as on 'the way'. I will probably never reach the end until time finally runs out for me. But you are quite correct, I am retired and not dead, although I don't feel as alive as I used to ! I have checked through the pilg...
