Re: Social Drinking - or, 'Cutting down'

hi julie, darcy and everyone that book sounds good - i'll keep an eye out for it. i was thinking today that 'social drinking' is actually not what i have been doing. 'social' implies other people around and even when my husband has been there we have been sitting side by side watching telly and not ...

Re: Alcoholism - Some facts

hi mike that's certainly what i had read too. for quite a while i have used it to justify drinking more than the safe units - "well the figures are arbitrary anyway, i run 2 miles a day [alas no longer!] so i am fitter therefore i can drink more units" and other wonderful self-deceits. i'm no scient...

Re: NEW MEMBERS - PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE

lost in france - your situation sounds really isolating and frightening. i hope you are able to speak with other people and get along to the support group. even knowing you are not alone is a huge support in the middle of stressful times. do keep us all up to date with how things are going with you....

Re: NEW MEMBERS - PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE

hello to the new peeps! i joined the forum only this week and have found it hugely helpful. i was drinking my weekly units each night before and the whole thing of not sleeping, being afraid to go to bed without having drunk a lot is so familiar. i was waking in the night as soon as the alcohol wore...

Re: Physical health

hi peeps the palpitations are very likely to be from the drink. i read a lot about them a while ago when they started for me, along with horrible night sweats. i thought it was the menopause (well i was looking for any reason other than the wine!) but my gp did tests and it wasn't. there is a condit...

Re: CO-DEPENDENCY...information for All

hi jos it is amazing to have a place to come like this. reading the co-dependancy stuff really made me think about the dynamics of our family. illness in a family really throws all the balls up in the air and re-designs all the patterns that made a family work well in the first place. at least in my...

Re: Getting To Grips With Reality

evening peeps i've been doing really well on the cutting down (only 3 days so far but a huge reduction in my wine consumption to a third of a bottle a night). but i am so ratty with my son and my husband - chewing their ears off for really small things. and my legs and arms ache and won't relax. i w...

Re: PERSONAL JOURNALS THREAD

hi peeps well this is day 3 of the cutting down thing and i've managed to make the one bottle of wine last for 3 days! for me this is incredible! the delaying starting is very good advice. mind you i have been very ratty today, which may or may not be to do with it. i think i tend to dull my anger a...

Re: CO-DEPENDENCY...information for All

this is really interesting to read. one thing that springs out on a lot of the threads is how childhood stuff has affected so many of us. i certainly don't feel i had a happy childhood and it took years to even begin to put it somewhere manageable and get on with life. when i was 8 my mum decided i ...

Re: Alcoholism - Some facts

hi julie when i read my post over again it sounded different to how i meant it - i guess that is the trouble with writing things down. what i was trying to say was in response to some of the posts where people wrote as though the people weren't really welcome here on this thread unless they were abs...

Re: Alcoholism - Some facts

i'm new to BE and i'm rambling through the forums. i read quite a bit of the earlier posts on this one but started to feel a bit got down by them so i've just leapt to the end to put in my five eggs worth. some people clearly want to cut out alcohol altogether and that is the right thing for them. s...

Re: psychological addiction

i'm the same - its not the alcohol in itself with me as we have had a couple of bottles of mulled wine in the cupboard since 2 christmases ago and it has stayed untouched, even when i have has no other wine in the house. i think its like people who give up smoking. they say if they have a drink in a...

Re: Social Drinking - or, 'Cutting down'

hi people i'm new to BE and i'm finding it really brilliant. i've been drinking too much since i was about 14. in those days it was bingeing at the weekend and keeping up with the boys pint for pint. as i got older it became more frequent but less volume so i was able to convince myself i was a soci...

Re: PERSONAL JOURNALS THREAD

hi julie thanks for your encouraging post. i actually only had a couple of glasses (about a third of a bottle of wine) last night so i did better than i planned. i think what helped hugely was the support from here. also i tried some of the things i know work. i started later - instead of opening th...

Re: PERSONAL JOURNALS THREAD

i've just signed up to brighteyes and i've been reading everyone's posts avidly. last year i went to hypnotherapy and got the drinking really well under control for quite a long time. i don't want to be abstinent, but i do want to choose to drink or not rather than having to crack open the wine ever...

Re: KEEPING IN TOUCH ON FORUM

i relate very much with what tessa writes. i left my mum when i was 8 to live with my dad. i grew up feeling she didn't want me and it affected so much of my life, and the decisions i made. i have leaned on my troubled past as a reason for drinking and having so little concern for my own health. i h...

Re: NEW MEMBERS - PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE

hello! i am a new member. i am female, 49, have a child with special needs and a husband with serious illness, as well as having my own stressy stuff - all of which i have been using as an excuse for drinking too much for years. i am in the 'over a bottle of wine a day, every day but still holding d...
