Re: I Will Not Drink Today Because..............

....it's a bloody lousy investment. To facilitate (and celebrate) dryness today, I just returned from the grocery with 1.5 L tomato juice, 1.5 L orange juice, 1/2 gallon organic milk, 1 small bottle of Tabasco, one bag of locally grown peanuts, and two bananas. Total tab $13.59. If I was drinking to...

Re: The Book Club

Thanks for suggesting "When the Sacred Ginmill Closes", Caroline; enjoyed it very much. I'm nearly complete with "Goodbye Mr. Wonderful" by Chris McCully. Very real first-hand look at recovery, so real to be grim at times. I find it not only powerfully sobering (and I do need all the sobering I can ...

Re: The First 7 Days

Very well done BE; not only for your personal climb up but for helping others with their climb as well. I do look forward to following your progress and your words of wisdom. Best wishes on your one day at a time journey. And thank you TJ, I will dust myself off and get started again. I think that "...

Re: The Book Club

Thank you Caroline,

The local library did not have When the Sacred Ginmill Closes, but I just bought a copy on eBay. I'm looking forward to getting started with it.

Re: The First 7 Days

Not so good for me on Saturday. Had a willful binge and now suffering the consequences. The trigger was an old habit of cold beer after a day of physical work in the sun. How good it was to wake with a clear head; how dumb to endure an otherwise fine morning in a haze.

You are welcome BE; my words were nice perhaps, but more important my words of thanks are sincere. Day 6 for me!

Re: The First 7 Days

Gladmorn, you are right on the need for support. I tried for years to beat this problem on my own (all very well documented in my journal). The journal reveals clear and early recognition of "I've got a problem" entries woven along with years of busted resolutions. I failed (miserably) on my own hun...

Re: The First 7 Days

Thank you BE, and a well done to you for you AF accomplishment as well as a thank you for your passionate support for everyone here. I don't have the late-to-bed problem. With a bottle of wine in the fridge I had a reason to stay up after the kids were in bed. Now after a chapter or two with a glass...

Re: The First 7 Days

Melo, that was quite a feat of inspiration. I would have told myself that I can always start again after a really good bender. Thank you. Day 5 for me and I've noticed a couple of wonderful things after this short period of living AF. First, mornings are much more peaceful for me and the little ones...

Re: The First 7 Days

Melo, please flush the stuff to the only place where it can do some good. It's great for the wastewater treatment works but not for you. And as a wastewater treatment engineer as well as a reforming alcohol abuser I should know something on both counts. Please.

Re: The Book Club

Ian Rankin's "The Complaints" is a good read for those of us searching for a better life without alcohol. The main character, Malcom Fox, is a moral and competent Edinburgh detective who gave up "tippling" a few years back. Fox deals with the challenges and temptations of living dry without letting ...

Re: The First 7 Days

Welcome newcomers, BE has been my best source of hope and strength for getting out from under this awful habit. I did relapse a few weeks ago and now am on Day 3 for the second time. In addition to the Newcomers thread, the perusing the What Happens if I Try to Have Just One thread is worthwhile. Re...

Love to join you, BE, thank you. I do enjoy the company here. My day 2 is not yet complete, but looking great. Hope your day 2 was even better. Good to see your here Drynout, I've not had 5 non-contaminated weeks since I was 16 but would like to permanently escape the miserable deceitful beast. Welc...

[quote="Lynda21"]PS - just been reading some of the recent posts, I'm gonna need to catch up. Also wondering where some of my fellow EAF-fighters from a month ago have gone.... Hello Lynda, welcome back. I returned to my same miserable habit a day short of completing the Two Week challenge back in A...

Re: The First 7 Days

Hello BE friends, After 13 wonderful haze and headache-free days back in April my apparently under-developed judgement led me to believe that I deserved ONE late-evening drink. Well guess where ONE drink quickly led me to? Right back in my dark pit. Well today I begin climbing out again. Best wishes...

Re: Two Week Challenge

Hello BE friends, I'm on day 11 and life is better. I was a heavy evening drinker and while I was on the stuff I kept telling myself that I drank too much but it was not interfering with my quality of life. I was wrong. Head is clearer, sleeping better, more energy, and I'm much less cranky with the...

Re: The First 7 Days

I'm doing well BrightEye, thank you for asking. I'm on day 9 and am feeling strong and and on the right path. Allen Carr's book arrived in the middle of my 7 day challenge; after reading several "how-to" books on alcohol over the years Carr's book is the only one I've found that appears to have been...
