Hi everyone,

I just felt like sharing a few thoughts, about today and about some people i met recently. Tonight has been lovely, a 2 hour and 40 minute phone conversation with a male friend. How good it is to chat to nice people, and feel good again...

I haven't thought about drinking for a long time. I think the final acceptance that i cannot drink in safety, and the passage of time has made it the norm to not think about drinking. So really i have nothing to pat myself on the back for, because not drinking is now the norm and no longer a battle. I don't say that to make others feel bad who are still struggling. I remember my own struggle and obsession with alcohol and it was torture, i cannot forget that struggle and and how it consumed every waking moment. I hated it and feel for others who are still in that psychological cycle.

Being in that tiring obsession with alcohol used to make me feel trapped and hopeless. I thought it would never come to an end and wondered why it seemed easier for others but not myself. It is only now i can see that the weapon i needed to free myself was insight. Thankfully, there is so much insight shared here that i was able to learn and gradually free myself from the trap. I feel we don't have to be tough, or have tons of will power. We just have to see and practice a bit of patience and self belief. We all can be free if we keep putting one foot in front of the other...

So nearly 6 years on and no desire to drink at all i feel i should share some bizarre thoughts that came from nowhere on meeting a girl in hospital who said she had stopped drinking for two years. I thought she meant totally abstinent until she added that she has two small baileys every fortnight for a treat. This sent my head into a spin. She was able to have just two baileys every fortnight ??? Wow, maybe i could do that now, i love baileys !

The idea span around for a little while until i remembered that it would not stay at 2 'luxury' drinks. It never ever did. And so i relaxed and threw the thought out. I don't want to drink, it must have been a touch of euphoric recall, a cosy, creamy comforting drink... forgetting the dangers lurking in its sweet taste. Phew !

Thankfully it was self honesty (which im not brilliant at !) that completely saved me from dipping my toe in again. I was in a foreign environment mixing with some people who were still in the throes of various addictions, or they were detoxing. It was unsettling, but the education given to me on BE was fixed somewhere deep in my then befuddled brain. Having insight really does save us. And the longer we strive for sobriety with fellow BE'ers the greater the insight becomes.

So today has been a good day. I am eternally grateful to be sober and well today, and to have lovely chats on the phone. Long may it last please :)

Much love, nicky xx

Nicky, thank you for those such wise words <:)> I especially like the part about it being patience and self belief that will get us though not toughness and will power, I believe this too, we need to be kind to ourselves and believe we can do this rather than berate ourselves.

On another note, I just gave away a bottle of baileys to the school for Xmas hampers - let's hope I don't win it back in the raffle :D

Lovely post Nicky ;)?

Euphoric recall can strike at any time, but so long as we don't act upon it, it's fine. I like to think of it as a little reminder from our self conscious not to take too much for granted. I've been sober for quite a long time now and I feel comfy and secure. However, I also sometimes need to be reminded that I am only one drink away from a relapse. It doesn't hurt to remember the bad old days occasionally.

Thanks TC, you are so right its does not hurt to remember the bad old days occasionally. Its a good reminder that there was nothing glamorous or enjoyable about drinking for us. There never will be either, and i don't want or miss it at all. ;)? <:)>
