Horizon might be worth watching tonight. BBC 2 9pm. "What's the Matter with Tony Slattery".

Thanks, Rachel ;)? I've been a fan of his since my teens, as sad as his story as often been.

There were a couple of articles last year on Tony Slattery and interview. Anyway I did start to watch it last night , recorded it too as I thought it would be difficult to watch . It was . So will catch up with the rest .

I watched what's the matter with Tony Slattery. Brilliant I thought - brave, unsparing, honest. And what an amazing portrait of enduring love.

edit crossed posts SB. But yes, the love was so evident. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

This was my original post:

It is very sad. The alcoholism was so evident, and his attitude to it so familiar. That made me more sad than the fact that he is unrecognizable (I am old enough to remember him well in his heyday. I used to record WLIIA to keep), that he has brain damage from a go it alone cold turkey. He's just not there in terms of giving it up, and the apparent optimism of his partner at the end made me feel even more sad, as it didn't seem warranted. I think his partner could probably do with therapy for having to cope with him tbh.
He seemed reluctant to examine himself, but I suppose doing the program suggested some willing in this regard? Or did he just need the money? Money or not I hope it does set him off in a better direction.
I found curious that constant refrain that thinking about his issues and past was self-indulgent. My husband thought this was disingenuous but I could definitely identify with this, rightly or wrongly. It always feels to me that there is an element of self-indulgence in (my) depression. Maybe that's part of the condition to feel that way, but it's undeniable that when you are depressed the world narrows to you more than it perhaps should.
He also kept talking about drinking to numb things. That's definitely my main reason for drinking. Of course you end up trying to numb the things that alcohol causes. I didn't sense that with him. But mainly only saw a small amount of the surface, I think. Although also perhaps more than he intentionally revealed.

Anyway it was quite well done. Not too patronizing as the invisible interviewer approach often is.

Worth watching.

You might need to be logged into Facebook to view this, but I wholeheartedly recommend it. What's not to like about Toyah tap-dancing like a caffeine-high mouse (her own description) to the music of King Crimson? Simply joyous! :D But how many times did they have to rehearse this? The timing at the end is so amazingly choreographed!

Apologies to those without FB! <:)>

Can anyone recommend a good movie? My day one and I’m locking myself in my room at 8pm with tv.
I’ve got Netflix and prime.
Thanks

Ach, that's such sad news, Pickles. I hadn't seen that until now :( Thanks for the link - I'll have a read of it.

We had a vile, racist w#':*!:@ at work tonight. He was ejected and banned from our shop. The person he gave most grief to was my lovely Polish colleague. I say "lovely" because she's by far the nicest and most hard-working member of our team. It was only a day or two ago that she and I had been discussing how much the Polish Squadron 303 contributed to the Battle of Britain.

Which reminded me of these words and this song...

There is no 'us' and 'them'; it's an illusion. We are all human beings, and we all have a responsibilty to support one another
