Thanks for everything folks. I’m sticking around and trying to sort my way through it all. Gone back to 7 days :) Signed back on to a quit smoking forum I was on last year. I’m not going to give up giving up on anything ;)?

I'm completely sober. 4 weeks now. Just saying. 4 whole weeks, whoa. Of course that's nothing to some of you but to me it's, well 4 weeks. 4 weeks with no alcohol. Just think of it. Nothing, no alcohol whatsoever, and I've not missed it one bit. I've a mountain to climb.

Cheers soberboots, if you'll pardon the drinking terminology. I've just kept quiet and got my head down. Feels good but mustn't get complacent. I don't miss it one bit. If I can do it........

Week 5 sober done! Visited local Christmas market today. Booze everywhere! Could of murdered a pint or a whisky to warm me up! It was hard, but I resisted, even when wife asked me to taste her mulled wine!

There am I, boasting about my 4 weeks sober above, and here I am with a can of lager sitting next to me. I managed to get through 4 weeks by not saying anything to anyone about stopping drinking. It was just a secret thing between me and me - and it worked. But, as soon as I told people that I've achieved this hitherto unknown target, this perilous voyage through unchartered waters, then I drank again. I can't give up when I'm open about it and I can't give it up when I keep it to myself. I've made a pig's arse out of it. I can't believe that I've thrown away all that hard worked sober time.
Oh well, never mind, another get free bid up the bumhole. So be careful out there, it's an insidious thing we're dealing with - sneaky. Be watchful.
Best of luck.

Oh dear! I do sympathise. Alchohol addiction is a right sneaky bastard and lead to some bonkers thinking, like "let's celebrate being sober! By, er, drinking...." I fell for it SO many times myself. It might help to look at AVRT if you haven't before http://www.rational.org/index.php?id=36 but in any case dust yourself down: don't beat yourself up, use the energy of anger with yourself and turn into anger with drink. Learning from experience is what counts in the end: the only ones who fail are the ones who stop trying.

Thanks Soberboots. I'm not drunk, no wild times here - I've had 5 of my 8 cans of Kronenberg and been watching Only Fools And Horses - but the fact is that all the good work has been undone. I know from numerous previous attempts that the first drunk day influences the second and so on. Anyway, I've unmade my bed and now I've got to lie on it. Next time - whether it's tomorrow or after christmas I''ll aim to be more engaged with the good people on here.
Good luck to you all.

I don’t think the good work is undone, stp, you’re on the road and you did really well for several weeks
I don’t know why we struggle to get straight back on being AF either, maybe it’s the huge effort it takes to take the plunge and keep it going in the first days and weeks or maybe it’s just the rebound of the addiction seizing it’s chance
It’s all experience and I agree with SB it’s only them who stop trying actually fail
It’s always a bit underwhelming too isn’t it when you slip, either that or bad things happen :|

So, I was due to have a Christmas lunch with a couple of friends today. I *casually* (ie carefully planned) mentioned I'd not be drinking to one of the friends last week. Lunch was cancelled :? I do know why. "Lunch" isn't fun if someone isn't drinking. Disappointing, but hey ho.

Hey ho indeed Martha. Today I met an old work colleague who I haven’t seen for ages. We chatted for a while and then she asked me “you still don’t drink, do you?” When I confirmed that no, I don’t, she sort of tutted and shook her head. I don’t think she meant to be as obvious with her disapproval as she was, and I know from experience that she drank (or presumably still drinks) like I did, in quantity and with abandon, so I suppose she’s just disappointed not to be able interact on that level. Tough luck!

I’d love to have lunch with you, if that’s any consolation! <:)>

Best,
sgx

Martha and SG- those people ard not your friends, unbelievable. I’m really indignant

My OH is such a bore with a drink in him, I can tolerate it less and less as he gets less and less aware of the effort Ive put in.
Can’t stand another Xmas like this one
