Any Ideas for poster??

Post by sarahjane162 » 12 Aug 2011 10:47

Hi
HELP
Does anyone have any ideas for a poster or saying I can put on the bedroom wall to see each morning when I get up that will remind me not to give in?? I'd like something positive and uplifting rather than 'big brother'.
I'm so full of good intentions after I've sneaked and cheated and upset hubby to point of making him more ill than he already is. Think I've a very convenient memory after drinking I'm devastated by the result and vow never to do it again..

Thanks
Sarahj

I've sometimes thought of doing some sort of poster/reminder to not drink. I have a feeling though, that I would ignore it if I decided to drink again.
I've sometimes wondered that perhaps if I embroided one - a sort of creatively stitched unique type of one of a kind thing, then perhaps that would inspire me to stay stopped - but I've never got around to it.
I've also thought about painting a picture that would represent the awful nightmarish depression that comes after a lapse or relapse - something really dark that would instantly take me back to that awful place that I wouldn't want to be. But I've never got around to that either.
Perhaps we could try creating something like this and post pictures of them on the forum - it might inspire us :D

Here's a suggestion.

Get a pile of magazines.. everything from house type mags, lifestyle, clothes, places, inspirational stuff etc.

Now set yourself a time limit, and go through the magazines ripping out pictures which you think represent what your life will feel like when you are fit healthy and alcohol free. Maybe some inspirational words too.. anything which catches your fancy and inspires you.. the you you have always wanted to be.

Now get a large piece of paper.. at least A3.. piece of wallpaper, or something, and take your images and create a collage from the pictures and words.

It is amazingly powerful to do this. You may resist and think it sounds silly, but give it a go. You will create your own poster which every time you look at it will inspire you to keep going to create the life you want...
"Let me respectfully remind you,
Life and death are of supreme importance.
Time swiftly passes by and opportunity is lost.
Each of us should strive to awaken. . .
. . . awaken,
Take heed. Do not squander your life."

That's a wonderful idea Freedom! I'd been trying to think of something inspirational but my brain isn't working that way at the moment ;)
One reason I don't drink is that I want to know when I am having a good time.

Hi
Thanks Renaci and Freedom for your ideas and Kraftykat for your support. You've given me a start with the Collage idea. I'll work on it. Collecting the mags etc together should give me positive thoughts for today and tomorrow. I'll report on progress, and welcome any further thoughts
Thanks

The collage thing does sound good.

I wanted to write regularly and put up an inspirational quote above my computer on the wall. I still didn't follow it, though it does catch my eye from time to time.

If you don't fancy the collage or want more than one thing you could have a look through the 'Good Reads, Poems and Quotes' thread...

...and don't forget to look at people's signatures, some of those are inspiring.

hi
my partner got a huge tattoo (might have spelt that wrong) on his arm and chest of a phoenix rising-symbolic of his sobriety,, not sure what he is thinking of it now. i dont advise this. a poster is far wiser i wish i had heard of this idea of a collage and i may have been able to help him make one and proudly hung it on our wall

Hi guys,

This reminds me a bit of putting a bikini pic on the fridge! It's a good start to the day, to focus by having the poster in your room, I'm thinking however- and this is me, that it'll be too late by the time I stumble into my room unable to see! EAF strikes late in the day for me.

Your idea has inspired me to look into something I could put in my wallet, so when I'm at the bar... you get the picture! I'm a cutting down drinker and I need all the help I can get! Maybe a reminder of the poster of vision board to refocus in times of crisis/temptation.PS I have a bikini pic in my wallet which alone hasnt worked against EAF! gOT TO KEEP TRYING UNTIL WE FIND WHAT WORKS.

Vision boards are a great tool by the way - that's what that collage would be called. They do help to focus your subconscious on what you want from life- so freedom, no not weird, a powerful tool!

Good thread guys (::)

Hi all
Thanks for the ideas so far. I've started collecting pics for collage but am also
working on the poster/saying idea. I'm sure a play on words such as
"Hang in, not over".
"Hang on"
"Don't hangover the edge"
"You haven't drunk it yet"
Any suggestions welcome??
Thanks Sarahj

Since jumping in the ring to help my father with his alcoholism; I've used the analogy that he is a gladiator in the ring fighting a tiger (I believe this can be just as hard/dangerous). I as well as other members of our family are in the ring ready to help him fight but he has to pick up his weapons and shield. These can be his AA meetings, hobbies, any thing that helps him fight the tiger. I'm designing a poster for him based on this; if you would be interested in seeing the end product let me know! ;-)

in addition to all of the above, I find that if I listen to favourite songs ( with lyrics) I become inspired to paint them - that sounds odd, for example I love Bette midler, so I listened to my favourite CD and painted four pics which were visuals with some of the words inscribed in silver pen ( acrylic paints - should have kept the photos of them before I gave them away, then could have posted!)

There are some fantastic tracks on the music thread related to sobriety and you can do the collage, poster, idea in the same way - music touches the creativity neural pathways apparently, so defintely an aid.

I think I will have a go myself and post the results :)

Gralle <:)> hi and welcome to BrightEye. You are so right that the feeling of wanting a drink can come upon you very quickly and can be incredibly powerful. I've experienced that a few times and it's quite scarey how intense it feels at the time. I guess what has helped me is gaining a better understanding of what a drinking problem is.
