Sitting in one of the cafés yesterday morning that Wife & I often frequent tucking into my omelette and salad for breakfast (watching the carbs) I was horrified to realize they were playing an xmas music CD on the multi-player, oh no I said to OH "they're not playing this xmas music crap already are they" George Michael, Last Christmas.

Bah! Humbug.

Time to dig those wire coat hangers out of the closet and get creative, despite the fire risk ;)?

I'm the one who mutes the sound when the xmas television commercials are on the TV

I'm the one who replies "what's there to get ready for" when people ask me "are you all ready for Christmas?"

Xmas songs are top of my 'Things I Loath About Xmas' list.Slade and Wizard especially, way too loud and shouty.I walked out of Tesco last week leaving a basket half full of groceries behind because my ears had already been assaulted by Slade twice that day, and that's more than enough for one person to suffer.

I quite like a Xmas carol though, as long as it's played very, very quietly.

Then there's the shopping, fighting through crowds of people to get pressies no-one wants, luckily the credit card bill doesn't come in till January, the most depressing month of the year. And we just won't mention the hangovers or the Xmas parties where everyone makes a fool of themselves. Bah humbug!

Xmas tat, especially alcohol -related Xmas tat.I've just done an online grocery shop and on the 'Things we think you'll love' list that came up at the checkout was a Prosecco scented candle.I've never bought a scented candle in my life, much less one that smells of Prosecco.

That is such a weird concept, Caroline! "Mmm... Just what I've always wanted - a candle that makes my living room smell like I've been on a wine-bender for several hours! Why, nothing says 'class' more than a house that stinks of booze, that's for sure!"

Whatever next? Whisky-scented deodrant? Or lager-aftershave, for the man who loves to smell like a p*ss-head?

I swear I'm not going into another shop that's playing Xmas 'music' until it's all over.I had to practically run out of M&S yesterday when they played Slade twice in the space of half an hour. It's not just the song itself that's awful, it's the tedious, endless repetition of it all that depresses me.

On a similar note, the BBC reported 'It's A Wonderful Life' has been voted best Xmas film.Again.Who actually takes part in these polls? No one ever asks me, and I watch loads of telly

I'm going to watch One Foot in the Grave this afternoon.Sometimes Victor Meldrew is the only thing that keeps me relatively sane.

TC, there was a woman in Asda yesterday complaining that her Xmas day was going to be ruined because they didn't have a Xmas jumper in her son's size, so now they won't be able to wear matching Rudolph the red nosed reindeer jumpers

That made me chuckle, sorry, Caroline! The shop I work for part-time has a Christmas CD on all the time at the moment. In fairness, it has all the old classics that I actually like (I'm not adverse to a bit of Paul McCartney's Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime every now and then), but the CD seems very short and it repeats very quickly. As much as I love my job, I am glad it's only part-time

In fairness, it could be worse. Imagine working in one of the tourist shops in Edinburgh. There's one on Princes Street, opposite the tram stop, that blares out bagpipe music ALL DAY LONG! It's not that I dislike the bagpipes; but imagine have to work there five days a week, all year round

That sounds like downright torture

I do feel really sorry for retail staff having to listen to the same CD on a loop all day, it can't be good for their mental health.Still, Easter's just around the corner :D

Hello all,

Just needing to express some worries about Christmas day. I keep worrying about it ever since myself, daughter and her partner were invited to my niece's house for the whole of Christmas day and evening too. There will be 7 people altogether, having a meal and then games and buffet at night. My niece has been really thoughtful and said that me and her mum can use her bedroom to go if the house gets too noisy but truth is i just cannot cope with a lot of people in a fairly small home, for so many hours and with a lot of high spirits (which i know there will be, as daughter's partner is loud and excitable in company). Whenever i socialise for more than a few hours i usually need to go to bed ! :?
In the old days i would have coped using alcohol, but of course that is not an option anymore. I'm thinking of asking daughter's partner to run me back home early evening, because he said he doesn't want to drink after his works night out where he had the worst hangover ever (he doesn't actually enjoy drinking). The last few Christmas days have been very low key and this is the first time we have been kindly invited for a meal, buffet and games to my niece's house. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but really do need to address this before the day, especially as my mood is dipping atm and am feeling emotional much of the time. Being with people feels so overwhelming :(
Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.
