Welcome Lynn :\:

I've always found that sober firsts feel a bit strange. Planning's key - sobriety is incredibly liberating, so plan to make some good memories and enjoy yourself! You might feel a little as if you're acting a part, but that's just because you're forming new habits.

Welcome from me too, Lynn - and I'll third SB's advice to enjoy yourself ;)?

The joy of a first sober Christmas is being able to look back and compare it to all the drunk ones. For me, the sober ones are so much more pleasurable. As SB says, you can eat the food, let alone cook it. You enjoy the food. You enjoy the company more too, I think. There's none of that getting pissed too early in the morning and then drinking more through lunch and then falling asleep during the Queen's speech and then feeling groggy for the rest of the evening. There's no continuing to drink till bedtime and then waking on Boxing Day with a hangover but also with large black holes in your memory of the day before.

Sober Christmases. The first one may feel daunting to begin with, but - believe me - they are totally win-win ;)?

Thank you all for the welcome and the advice .... I’m going round my daughters for Xmas dinner, I’ve already asked her not to get any alcohol in ( she doesn’t really drink) we might try some AF wines instead

Lynn, two fizzy AF wines I don't mind are Nosecco and Lindeman's. As long as they're good and cold, I find them an excellent substitute.

Well done Moira!

A lot of places have an alcohol free lager or mocktails, but it is a shame the choice is so restricted.

I have done a sober Christmas Day before but not a sober December. My favourite drink is sparkling water with lots of fresh lemon juice squeezed in. 2 litres of Sainsbury’s Scottish highland spring water 45p and 2 x lemons 60p, sorted. :D

That sounds really good, Johnny ;)?

As a lager substitute, I found Becks Blue helpful when I first joined BE, and there are supposedly now some good AF ales which didn't exist back then (I always preferred ale to lager). I've never really got into other AF substitutes, although they can obviously be a very useful thing. I used to drink a helluva lot of wine, but that was simply to get drunk as quickly and as cheaply as possible, so I can't imagine enjoying the AF alternatives - I think I now just associate the taste of wine too firmly with getting smashed.

I think one of the joys of sobriety is drinking milk with a good strong curry, rather than the previously-obligatory beer. Milk might seem a sort of 'childish' drink to choose in public - certainly, some friends teased me very mildly about it to begin with. However, milk does take the heat away and allow you to enjoy the taste of the food more. So, sod what my lager-drinking, tongue-inflamed mates might think! :D
