As there are so few of us "Yankees" about on BE, I feel compelled to stand up and support my beautiful country. I will now sing the "Star Spangled Banner."

Well I was disappointed and didn't think England were very good at all - but then I know as much about football as I do about quantum physics!

Go the socceroos

My OH stayed up all night to watch the games (ex Brit)
I'm not that dedicated but I like the "match of the day' highlights

I just hope that all the money pouring into Sth Africa will ensure that every child gets an education
and that living conditions will be improved for all people :)

Hey Sapp, any chance of putting your national anthem 'words' on here? Would be nice to know at least what the americans sing with such conviction. That always touches me , when people sing for their country and put their heart into it. I love hearing our national anthem sung by a load of beer swilling fans with such gusto, it actually never fails to make me cry!
Well we didn't manage to whip your arses, we tried and then we willingly came and rubbed some cream on  The sad thing about being a goal keeper is you can save a thousand goals but if you make ONE mistake like yesterday it is THAT you will be remembered for! Not a great position to be in.
What do you Yankies call us in America? I think the AUssis call us Pommes but for what reason I know not?
We will manage to make this thread fun AND cultural in the end :D
Ps I have NO idea why we call the americans Yanks? Might have to go for a strole on Wilkpedia.............
ANy offers out there?
Shame for my Brazilian students that Portugal is in the same group.... Many of them have Portugese family or come from Portugal, so who will they support? I suppose it is a win win situation if we look on the bright side :D
Have a great sunday everyone. xxx

I thought the Brits were known as Limeys in Yankee-land but could be wrong. :D

I was just reading this article :

"Professor says World Cup trophy cannot be solid gold" - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/10301713.stm

I think the professor concerned must have had the word "boffin" tattooed on him somewhere at birth. Take a look at his picture half way down the page!

Is it just me
Or is watching a soccer game while listening to a swarm of hornets enough to drive anyone else nuts
(It's called "soccer" here as we have three football codes..Aussie rules..Rugby League and Rugby Union)

Zelda, common usages for Yankee:

~an American who lives in the North (especially during the American Civil War)
~New Englander: an American who lives in New England
~used by Southerners for an inhabitant of a northern state in the United States (especially a Union soldier)

E. B. White summed it up this way:

To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Northerners, a Yankee is an Easterner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

I have no idea what the pie thing is about. I think there was Dutch connections . . . were the Dutch known for eating pie. ????

NPR (radio) said the Spanish had the most interesting team, the team with the most flair.
I think I am going to join Eddy in cheering on the North Koreans. :D
