Music, movies and tv

Postby Lush » 03 Nov 2008 14:11

Just a follow-on from a thread last night about what music to listen to depending on mood. If I'm feeling low and alone one song that always calms me down is Everybody Hurts by REM, the lyrics are just so comforting. If I'm stuck for something to listen to then Pink Floyd or David Bowie is just perfect.

If I need a good giggle then Laurel & Hardy do it for me every time, as do Billy Connolly, Russell Brand and a Scottish sketch show called Chewin' the Fat. Laughter really is the best medicine.

Music has always been very very important to me and just wonder if anyone else is affected the same way and finds it therapeutic?

Reason: more straightforward title for thread

What a great idea for a thread Susie, can see this one opening some interesting thoughts on what influences us and also some light hearted relief at times too.

When I was twelve I might not have picked up cigarettes if it were not for Sandy stubbing that fag out post sexy transformation in Grease.

When I was twenty I might have stopped if I had not seen Lauren Bacall say 'you know how to whistle don't you Steve'

Don't get me started on music, desert island disc? desert island life

I hate 'everybody hurts' - everytime it comes on I feel like I want to go lay down on the nearest railway lines  It brings back some bad memories.

I love pink Floyd.

I dont often re-watch films but films I will watch again and again are 'gone with the wind', all the Bette Davies films, The classic black and whites I love. I also enjoy a good weepy ' who will look after my children'
Beaches

I also enjoy the upbeat stuff like , 'Greece', Ma ma mia was just brill. All of Barbara Strieslands comedy musicals.

Gone with the wind is one of my two favourite films of all time Hammy. Hence my old avatar. That scene where Rhett forces her to go to Ashley's party in the red dress after her bad behavior, well if Scarlett O'Hara were real I know exactly how she felt when she walked into that room ;)

Goodfellas is my other all time favourite.

Sorry not with you on Beaches :o

I'm not big on weepy films either, I used to cry at Little House on the Prairie when I was a kid though!
One of my favourite films of all time is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, I just love it. Must have seen it a dozen times. Another one of my favourites is The Wizard of Oz, I watch it every time it's on tv and I have the dvd too! It was so far ahead of its time and Judy Garland was just perfect as Dorothy.

I wanted to run through that field at the begining of Little house... Still do...

On one flew over the cuckoo's I'm totally with you, you must read the book though if you've not already.

Hmmmm it's all gone a bit heavy on Channel 4, Dispatches programme about the kids of drug addicts and the lack of specialist help for such kids.

Ever since I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster...

I hardly watch TV or films or listen to music these days, which is daft, because they do have a huge effect on me. I'm sort of teaching myself classical music from scratch; Erik Satie's Gymnopedies are gorgeous and transform my mood. I'm going to keep a careful eye on this thread and see what I can learn. Especially now I've got a telly again :D (and oh, my, it's pretty. I bought one I couldn't really afford by juggling some credit cards, and John Lewis knocked £50 off the price and delivered it for nothing. It's a glossy black Sony Bravia and I like looking at it when it's off as much as when it's on!)

I wish I'd seen that Dispatches programme, that sounds really good. Do C4 have the equivalent of iplayer?

Bupster if your telly's up and running you can catch it on C4 +1 if you have digital, it's well worth a watch. If not, go to the C4 website and download 4oD (4 On Demand), it's a bit slow because you have to download the programme unlike iplayer where it's just sort of there.

I used to play the violin when I was very young and made it into the county youth orchestra aged 10. I recently bought a cheap violin from eBay, a Stradivarius it ain't, but I have some dvds so I can re-learn not only how to play but to read music again. Can't really make a start on it though until my stupid thumb is better. I think I should supply my neighbours with some earplugs hehehehe

What a brilliant idea!

(edited to add: the violin, not the earplugs!)

Now this next programme I'm going to watch on Bravo (Boozed Up Brits Abroad) is definitely going to affect my state of mind in that it will reinforce just WHY I don't want to drink any more!

Ive always loved this Bill Wyman song for some reason. It couldn't possibly represent wish fulfilment.

Said she come from R-i-o, lived on a mountain.
I met her in Trafal-gar-square, she was sitting in the fountain.
She took off 'er 'at and she had love-ly hair.
Said she smoked marajuana at the Co-co-ba-na there.
South American Lad-y, you've got that crazy beat.
Brazilian beau-ty with the flash-ing feet.
We danced to the mus-ic at the Mardi-Gras.
Then jumped on the Concorde, you're so lah-di- dah.

...........Si si ............si si ............si si .............si si

Took her to a disco in Batt-e-rsea.
I asked her to dance and then she danced with me.
And then I took a chance. Come home with me today.
I live in France. We can get there B-E-A.

Je suis un rock star Je avais un residence
Je habiter la A la South of France
Voulez vous Partir with me
And come and rester la with me in France.

But BEA's on strike, there's no planes flying.
I can rent a motorbike, at least I'm trying.
We could go on the hovercraft accross the wat-er.
They'll think I'm your dad and you're my daugh-ter.

Je suis un rock star Je avais un residence
Je habiter la A la South of France
Voulez vous Partir with me

And of coure there is always the original version of American Pie by Don McLean. The song is too long to reproduce the lyrics here in full, but there are whole web sites dedicated to interpreting them, with each line annotated with at least three different meanings. Here's the start.

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin? whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die."
"This'll be the day that I die."
