Hi - I can't for the life of me work out how to start a new topic!!! is it something completely obvious that I just can't see for looking at, or do you have to have a certain number of posts under your belt beforehaving the privilige?

Thanks :)

Hi QOW, I think that only moderators can start new topics. The idea is, I assume, to save overloading the board with numerous short-thread topics. I've yet to find there is nowhere to say something I want to say, or to as something I want to ask.
Most gneral, questions/comments are welcome in appropriate Sobriety Challenge - if it's something more specific then you might have to peruse the various boards a bit but you will find a relevant thread I'm sure.

With that out of the way, welcome a-board BE. Stick with it - this online support really works. It has changed my life and, as a consequence, my family's life. I have read your posts and I add to the voices who have said we have all been there. Make sure you are ready with strategies for when you feel better about yourself. (For example, sweet things (chocloate, fizzy drinks - I used to wash a spoonful of honey down with some OJ) help with cravings.) Because you will probably feel the urge to be drinking again.

Read around the posts on all the boards. I found great motivation, support, advice, camaraderie, humour, insight, information etc. here. I, too, did not want to do the AA thing - and I have not (though did come close in the early days) because I found what I needed here. I hope you do too.

Ah right, I see. Thanks for the info Neal ;)?

I had wanted to start a thread asking if anyone else had a "normaliser" (in my case my best friend) who has a drink problem themselves and tries to normalise your behaviour so that a) you carry on drinking with them and b)They wont have to face up to their own behaviour.

It's going to be difficult but I can see me having to shut her out for a while, or only see her in small doses and at my house - most of our drinking happens at her house. She will offer a drink in the same way as others might offer tea or coffee.

I have just posted a little about it in the 7 day challenge, but I'm guessing there's a more appropriate place for it to go, in relationships maybe?

There is a thread called "Friends, old and new" on the Relationships board. There'll be some worthwhile past posts and current conversation if you post.

Keep the faith (SH!t - hope that doesn't sound to AA. That would never work for me either for similar reasons.)

Hi, could anyone help regarding sending PM's to others. After submitting them, they seem to stay in the outbox and won't send. Previous ones have been sent, but not sure what I'm doing wrong with it. Thanks. Advice welcome.

Several peeps have been asking about uploading a picture/cartoon(gif) into the text area. It's probably been explained before but here ya go anyway.

1. Find picture etc you like on internet and save it. Use copy/paste or save picture/target as. You can also copy a picture already on the forum to your pictures files (fireworks etc, but be careful cos peeps accuse you of stealing, looool).

2. Open the normal post reply. Under the save/preview/submit at the bottom you will see UPLOAD ATTACHMENT. Click on this.

4. Click on BROWSE - this should take you to your saved files. Find your picture, hightlight it and click OPEN. On the BE screen this will now put the file in the file name section.

5. Click ADD THE FILE.

6. File should now appear in the file comment. Click on PLACE INCLINE and your and the command 'attachment 123' etc (not the picture itself) will appear. To look if its ok click on Preview as per normal.

The system will only accept pictures maximum 500 high x 500 wide so if your picture is bigger you will have to resize it before uploading.

The above reads a bit complicated but, in fact, its pretty easy to do after a couple of tries.

A quick question as I can't work it out for myself!!

On the left hand side of the board eg if you look at the 'general recovery' index....there are symbols.....some look like a light bulb (well they do to me anyway!) and some are circles with text rolling through them....

I've worked out that the red ones have unread posts and the others don't....but why are they different symbols?

And....some have speech bubbles....one has a Mr Green face....and one has a star...and some have attachments...is there a reason for that too....?

just curious....

and EAF....for the record....is Evil Alcohol Fairy...??

thanks in advance! xx

Hi Behindblueeyes

Bit confusing sometimes, isn't it!!! The threads with the lightbulbs are sticky so will remain up towards the front, whereas the threads with a round front will drift away if they are not read or written in. The stars and the Mr Green's are put there by the person that sets up the thread and I think that it's more temperament than anything else.

And yes, you're right about the EAF ;)

Another handy thing to know is that if there's a little orange rectangle to the left of the thread name it means there are posts since you last looked, clicking on it will take you to the first new post since you last visited.

i used to be when i wasn't logged in but okay when i was or maybe it was the other way around. i think clicking a button to do with british summer time fixed it for me, or perhaps it was jim... try user control panel, board preferences, are we in british summer time = no. or just pretend you live on the continent now! :D

Hi 2XS, I don't remember ever seeing a link like that, although I could well be wrong (I have something of a talent for "not hearing" requests for donations/money  )

I do remember, though, that Tobin said this on the BE At 4 Years thread:

Tobin wrote:[as] the Google Ads pay for the server subscription, there's no reason why it can't carry on for ever... (::)

Hope that helps!
