Re: Diet, weight loss & get into shape thread!

Postby Anna » 09 Mar 2008 21:01

Hello,

I'm 5' 6" and weigh anything between 9stone 8 and 10stone 3 .
I want to get rid of the wine belly and had been doing quite well until last night...
Have joined the fitness centre and was due to have an assessment tomorrow but have damaged my ribs due to being trollied so will have to cancel.
I walk about 1.5 - 2 miles a day with the dog and was beginning to get quite into the fitness thing....even bought some trainers.

I did the Atkins for a couple of weeks but I don't think its a good long term diet....I was really craving fruit and vegetables so will probably adapt it a bit. I've never been on any sort of diet before but I'd like to lose the belly and get rid of the sort of overhanging bits above my knees! So its not so much about weight, more about shape and tone and feeling better.

Hi Fiendish, Anna, Darcy

posting so late at night 'cause I stayed up sooooooo late last night , ended up falling asleep at six and now here I am tossing and turning.

I have always had to watch my weight, and have done very sucsessfully until two years ago when my relationship problems really started (I am very much a comfort eating, easier to swallow down painful feelings than feel them for me).

Also at that time the real problems with alcohol use to I was drinking half bottle vodka most nights. Alcohol has calories and food + alcohol + 2 years = a great fat walrus who is three stone overweight.

I can highly recommend Atkins for quick weight loss but as Anna said it is a hard one to stick with.

If I were going to recommend a diet (and believe me have tried them all over the years) then it would definately be the GI diet which is, as you know, fundimentally low carb but allows complex carbs in the diet which take longer to break down (Low GI carbs).

I need regular excersise really thats my prob and having little one, working full time, being full of dumb excuses, means I dont get it.

I hope the summer brings me some motivation. Just finished the book I was reading so will crack open the next for an hour see if it gets the eyes drooping again.

good Luck with tomorrow all.

Hi Eveyone,

I am 5.5 tall and weigh about 11.6 at the moment. I really need to loose some weight too and get fit. My neice got engaged this weekend and is going to have a party around May time. Also its my anniversary in August so it would be really nice to get down to around 10 stone by then.

Its really hard to concentrate on the alcohol thing and healthy eating/excersise etc as I feel like I have so much to acheive that I will never get there!! Anyway today is day 1 with the alcohol and I am hoping that the diet and fitness will follow! My hubby would be really amazed/impressed if I could get to August and not had a drink so that will hopefully be one of my Anniversary presents to him!!

Bye all

Fiendish, mon ami,
We could be clones. I am 5 '4" and 11 stone 2 - exactly the same as you. I don't have any scales at home but do weigh myself every Thursday at Boots. I am not on a specific diet - I just aim to have smaller portions for now and see how it goes. Excercise. like housework, is something I can't motivate myself to do yet - but I'm working on it. Thus I would be happy to post weekly results, if ony so that you feel better by making the comparison between us! And maybe your results will make me get of my bum and do something.

Hello Fiendish my love,
The battle is on. I weighed in today and I am still the same. 11 stone 2. But my competive streak has been woken up. Next week will be different (maybe!)

Hi Findish , Jaycee

I put on 3 stone in two years, heavier now than when I gave birth to any of the boys. Believe it or not for many years I was an excersise addict (def got addictive personality) arobics every night, sometimes twice a day, swimming, circut training. Even if I was doing a night shift I'd make sure I did my arobics before I went and swim in the morning. I had a 'six pack'.. What happened

I was single then of course and I loved my life. didnt overdo drink then either.

I will get around to loosing some and I am trying to control. The wierd habit I had when drinking was night time munchies. I would wake up in the morning to find food residue in the kitchen and then remember all the rubish I ate during the night! How strange is that!

I have lost a few pounds since that stopped. With 5-htp and not drinking my sleep and, so my mouth, is much more restfull ;)

Jaycee , when your back is better pilates may well be the one for you (with probs you said). It is good and works. I have a collegue who has done it for years, she is sixy and looks amazing. She swears by it. she is so glam. she also says she has lots of strength.

Ok I will try to do weekly weight and monitor now.

Hello Fiendish,
How are you doing? I'm still saving a place for you on the wagon - missing you!
Anna was asking after you yesterday. Pop in and say Hi to her.
My next weigh-in is on Thursday - can't wait - I can feel my bellies shrinking as we speak. Tis about time you caught up. (Was that a gentle enough kick?)

Hi Darcy, jaycee, HH

Jaycee your post gave me this frightening mental image of myself belly dancing  Unfortunately I dont need to make to much effort for my belly to move.

Darcy I would like a membership please but the last two years have taken such a toll I will need to start slowly. Aqua sounds good. Actually as we are not off to our cottage until sept/oct , I have been given some sort of incentive to loose weight. I put on three stone in two years and have never never looked like this. the weight went on so quickly through drinking and subsequent depression that I am still shocked to see myself.

I am going to try now and weigh myself once weekly and just aim for 1 - 2lbs weekly. so I am 12.12 right now and my target to start with is 10st (my usual weight was bit like you HH but I would be so grateful for 10st right now).

Heres to a body to take us into our new and better lives :D

Ok into the costume, had to run out and get one especially for this flippin 30pounds. I got one with a whale bone tummy support so I could use it for belly dancing and so avoid injury to others.

Oh flip ............... anyone got a razor?

This fitness club is great but do you have a steam room Darcy? I always feel so squeaky clean after a visit to one of those, especially after a "heavy" night before. (not that I'm intending to have any more of those!) You sort of feel all the toxins are leaving your body.

I don't believe this. I have taken it from a website Tessa posted a link to. I thought I was fat because I drank. Now it appears I am just fat. I thought I would lose weight when I stopped. Now I know I'll have to do a lot more than than. Maybe even, heaven forbid, excercise!

Alcohol, Calories & Weight
Drinking alcohol does not contribute to weight gain, according to scientific medical research.

The Data
Alcohol contains calories, but drinking alcohol doesn't lead to weight gain, according to extensive medical research, and many studies report a small reduction in weight for women who drink. 1

The reason that alcohol doesn't increase weight is unclear, but research suggests that alcohol energy is not efficiently used. 2 Alcohol also appears to increase metabolic rate significantly, thus causing more calories to be burned rather than stored in the body as fat. 3 Other research has found consumption of sugar to decrease as consumption of alcohol increases. 4

Whatever the reasons, the consumption of alcohol is not associated with weight gain and is often associated with weight loss in women. The medical evidence of this is based on a large number of studies of thousands of people around the world. 5 Some of these studies are very large; one involved nearly 80,000 and another included 140,000 subjects.

Alcohol beverages contain no fat, no cholesterol, and very little sodium. Of course, the nutritional value of different alcohol beverages varies.

The moderate consumption of alcohol is associated with better health and longer life than is either abstaining from alcohol or abusing alcohol. However, the health benefits of drinking are associated with moderation [learn more about Alcohol and Health]. On the other hand, heavy drinking is associated with cirrhosis of the liver, breast cancer, and other health problems. The key word is moderation.

Hi Darcy
am doing fine thanks, wanted to post this somewhere other than the alcohol bit as this might be off-topic there. I have found out a lot of stuff over the past week. Found out is perhaps the wrong phrase, but although i have not been doing my drinking of wine during the day for a month now, a few blips along the way, this week is the first week where i didnt even think of it... i am mega happy about this. No buts, not what if, its reality for me now. how it worked out for me wont mean it will work out for everyone, but if it would help i can post my experience on the forum.

Hello all

I posted on 21st of April that it would be D day for the diet as I had got a shock from the docs and also posted my weight as incentive to loose it.

I can now officially declare that over the last two weeks my weight has gone from 13stone to ..............................................................................................13 stone.

I think I need to try the herbalife with you Marsh...just going no where here. My sister is on a similar diet and lost 11lbs in her first week :o

Well at least I didnt put on.........thats got to be worth something

Im going for a swim, think Ill hit the weight room also. Anyone have one of those masks Hanibal the Canibal wears? - that could work.

Hey Fiendy

You have a missing Vlad (thought to be in the garden) and missing glasses. I think we need to interigate the cat.

Im off swimming today with OH and little one. Im so embarrased with my body that Im finding it all a little stressful to even think about being seen in a costume. But I guess if I hide myself away and do nothing I will never address the issue. so a big brave me is going to be seen - orange peel legs and all   - oh heck.

Oh Darcy <:)>

Men - you gota love em. He didnt say Fat though did he? and maybe he was just enjoying the little you had managed to gain (desperately trying not to dig a hole for myself here  ). Dont you dare go on a diet after all these years of trying to put it on.

the Rowing machine sounds good. just a little tonning is all we need as we get older. Except me ofcourse then your talking serious overhaul / lipo suction - tucks - botox - diet etc etc

Men talk differently to us - they are from mars remember. they dont like ultra skinny women and even a compliment from them can be taken as an insult by us.

You could aways feed him a plate of lettuce each time he comes over and explain that you fully took his words on board and that you knew he would want to support you in your weight loss venture...........He will soon start saying the 'right' things again ;)
