Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Hi Oneday
Life insurance will be influenced by your medical records insofar as if any new conditions arise, especially ones which may be deemed as 'self inflicted' they can refuse to pay out. I say this from experience when an endowment policy I had was returned to me when they discovered I hadnt disclosed later information. Maybe best to be honest or not seek gp help, or look into private care (not cheap).
I personally would be cautious of buying meds over internet. You have no guarentee they are what they say they are.
I dont even attempt to get life insurance with my history. However there are companies that take on higher risk people, shop around at this point.
Hope that hasn't been too depressing..

Hi everybody,
Does anybody know what the crack is with Prozac and alcohol? I'm not asking for me, but a friend who is an alcoholic (still drinking) and has been prescribed it by her Dr who isn't aware of the drinking. Should I be worried?

You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space

Oh right, so the worse thing is that the antidepressant wont work. That's not too bad then (depending on how you look at it). I was concerned that there would be some negative physical impact, such as on the the liver.

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Thanks anonymouse, I’ll have a proper look on the internet.
I was on Sertaline a few years ago and continued to drink heavily. One thing I did notice is that I didn’t get the same deep sense of shame or embarrassment following a binge. Dangerous in a way as it partly stopped me reaching the ‘enough is enough’ stage.
Cheers for the heads up re venlafaxine.

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Nicol just posted a reply on the November support thread but basically you should be able to get a prescription for Antabuse from your GP if you explain that you are wanting to abstain from alcohol, you will need to have a liver function test and make it clear to your GP that you understand that drinking whilst on Antabuse will make you very very ill.
Good luck, its a drug I feel they should prescribe more as it has really helped me.

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Hey guys
had a good chat with the doc who referred me to a substance councilling centre near where I stay he was wary about handing out antabuse without additional support, luckily they had a triage so I went straight there and had a chat with the councilor on duty. She told me I will be assigned a councillor and should recieve a phone call in a couple of days. I will get my bloods done in the morning the last time I had them done was may. Im feel like a weight has been lifted of my shoulders.
Thanks

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Way to go Nicol! That is great news. Let us know how you get on please? You'll never look back when you start taking it, it simply removes the internal 'will I, won't I' battle about whether to have a drink or not because you just cannot.

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Hi,
Am on my second day of taking antabuse and 7th day of being sober. After trying and trying and trying to drink moderately I have decided to get all the help I can get - wrote about it earlier on March general chat and support.
Low and behold almost as soon as I had taken the first pill my neighbour came around with a bottle of wine - I didn't tell why I couldn't drink but the fact was I couldn't. I felt like having a tantrum but it didn't change the fact that I couldn't drink - if I hadn't taken the antabuse I definitely would have drunk at least a bottle if not two bottles of wine...
So not sure how I am feeling but going to share how it goes on here in case it helps anyone else - reading Ms Cheese's detox diary has really helped me and I think with the battle against alcohol different things work for different people.
Definitely happy I am not hungover!

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
Thanks Ms Cheese
Going to see 'Les Miserables' again this afternoon, Cravings usually only hit in the evenings but the fact is I can't drink so that is that. Feel very cautiously liberated but it is such a strange kind of intimate feeling to have let the more reasonable side of me take control - and a bit scary! Don't know if that makes sense at all - just very jumbled feelings at the moment. Seeing doctor again on Wednesday who has been amazingly supportive then have some one to one counselling lined up with 'Action for Change'.
Feel sad and happy at the same time...

Re: Prescription Meds and Alcohol
You may feel confused now but you will soon realise that it is the best decision you have ever made, a few weekends spent without a hangover under your belt and you'll never look back. You cannot beat Saturday and Sunday mornings without a hangover.

Thanks Miss Cheese!
Day 8 AF and day 3 on antabuse. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings had huge unpleasant cravings for an hour or two each night and questioned what I was doing but each morning of course very pleased with my decision. Have decided to watch the whole of 'The Killing' and am already looking forward to watching a couple of episodes tonight.
Very tired but part of me things that maybe it is because a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Take care all,
Zara
