Great going Blifter.
Hopefully your feeling unwell will pass soon. Xx

Thanks Sarah. Managed to get some decent sleep this afternoon, first time in 9 days! Think it may have been because i took some ranitidine about 7am - will discuss with GP tomorrow.

Sainsburys delivery tonight - 8 bottles of BG :lol:

They were on offer!

Ranitidine shouldn't make you sleep I'm pretty sure. That said I'm glad you had some Blifter!

I endulged in the neat Elderflower cordial tonight.

Mmmmm mmm!

You had the cordial neat??!! Bit too strong for me i suspect.

The ranitidine was not to MAKE me sleep, it was to allow me to as the stomach pain of the last 8-9 days when laying down woke me up after a couple of hours at the max. We decided (at the GPs) was probably due to excess acid as i have had ulcers in the past and have taken it before.

As I am going out today I've made up a list of both my favourite drinks and variations of those that I've found on the net.
This is a drink list for well-stocked bars, but there are also plenty here for the less coctail-y places.
I'll put it it here - these are simple, and are also easy to make at home, of transform into punches. As a punch, you could make one batch and just throw in some spirits if you are to serve them at a party.

The one problem I run into is that bartenders tend to be somewhat unwilling to make AF drinks. I don't know why, really.
I usually see their unwillingness and raise them an ulcer operation, but even that does not always work.
What I do then is order the drink in part.
For instance, one ginger beer and one plain mineral water, on ice, with a slice of lime.
Get the drinks, and mix them together. I now have a simple ginger fizz.
Or, a soda and a glass of grapefruit juice with ice - mix them together and you got two glasses of a refreshingly bitter Rock Shandy, the bartender be damned! ;)?

Here's ma list:

Virgins & Drivers
->Ginger beer + soda, lime twist
Ginger beer + Iced tea, possibly seltzer
Ginger beer + bitters
Ginger beer + juice + seltzer
Ginger beer + soda + lemon juice
->Tonic + bitters, lime slice
Tonic + lemon juice + seltzer
->Virgin Daiquiris
->Virgin Mojito
->Shirley Temple - Sprite + grenadine, garnish
Monday Shirley Temple - seltzer + grenadine, garnish
Sunset Temple - Sprite + grenadine + orange juice, garnish
Monday Sunset Temple - seltzer + grenadine + orange juice, garnish
->Bitter Virgin: Soda, a few drops of bitter, garnish
Angry Virgin: seltzer, a few drops of bitters, garnish
Bittersweet Virgin: Juice, seltzer, a few drops of bitter, garnish
->Boston Cooler - Ginger beer+ ice cream
->Thin Man: Alcohol-free beer, seltzer (seltzer), massive lime twist
->Juice spritzer: Juice with soda /seltzer, lime garnish
->Rock Shandy: Soda, lemonade, bitter
->Roy Rogers: Cola, grenadine, coctail cherry for garnish
->Muddy Water: Cola, orange juice
->Pomme Noir: Apple juice, cola
->Mock Campagne: Apple juice, Ginger beer, lemon juice/grapefruit juice, mix to get right colour
Mock Campagne coctails are easy, fun and nice - put in crushed raspberries, curly orange zest and a drop of cranberry juice, add a sugar cube and atwo-three red chili "straws" (jardiniere). Sky's the limit!

Hi weiser

Thanks for the list - very timely. I was just deciding as I stood at bar last night and debated wine or something else - that I didn't have alternatives that I wanted . Coke etc don't do it.
Luckily they had AF beer so I grabbed that.

I did focus on ginger beer/ ale last time I had a couple of months AF so I will give some of yours a try. What's ' seltzer' in the uk ? Any ideas

Might be useful to post on the 7 days thread as I am sure it would be helpful. ;)?

One of the good/bad things I find is that drink becomes more functional. as in "No thanks. I don't want another drink. I'm not thirsty." A bit sad, but a small price to pay. Actually it's usually literally a very low price to pay... In some pubs, it's even free.

Seltzer is soda water/carbonated water isn't it?

Quite simply carbonated water, yes.
Or soda water, but sometimes soda water is club soda, carbonated water with a slight mineral/acidic taste added.

For me, drinks are less functional without alcohol: since they won't make me drunk (and since they are less expensive than alcoholic ones) I can have lots and lots, and really experiment with tastes and types and colours.

Now, if anyone could tell me where I can find bitters to buy, I could make many more awesome drinks at home!

Hi,

Weisir, there are some orange bitters at M&S and some celery ones too if i remember correctly?

Speaking of M&S, bought a bottle of sparkling berry soda the other day for £2.00 (750ml). It's pretty good, much better than the mexican lime we got from there. If anything it is a little too sweet so we are diluting it with 60% berry to 40% soda water and it tastes great, will definitely be getting some more.

I got Monin Bitter, am going to try it out as soon as spring comes bak (not in mood for fancy mocktails when it's snowing panflakes outside).
Going to find a tiny bottle to sneak bitter with me to bars, as well.
Only the real expensive bars have bartenders that are helpful/interested/competent when it comes to virgin/driver drinks, and I want to drink NICE things when I'm out!

I very recently discovered Asda red grape, strawberry and kiwi juice - absolutely delicious. Best (in my view) half and half, juice and sparkling water. They do some other combos too - and am trying a couple when Asda delivers my shopping in the next hour or two :)
I want to be the best me I can be ...

Good stuff Finley. Not sure we have an Asda in the centre of York?? ... think there might be one out at Monks Cross shopping centre but i have only been there once.

Bottle green update! With having a bad cold since Thursday night i have been drinking some of the Lemon & Gingergrass cordial with hot water and honey instead, it is really rather lovely - well worth a try.

Hi all, read some of the posts & all great ideas. I have dental distress (my gums feel like they're on fire) partly due to the alcohol. Having come clean to my dentist & hygeinist on the drinking they have advised me to cut down (worked that bit out on my own) & to avoid acidic drinks. This seems to leave me with plain water & tea....any other ideas?! No fruit juice, no nice lemonade made with real lemons, which puts my go to of lemonade & lime out of the equation....

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Clovercat,

Not really something i have looked into but one drink i tried recently is a sparkling apple and cucmber drink from M&S which wasn't bad (hardly ringing praise i realise :lol: but my g/f wanted to try it so i only had a glass).It is much more of a cucumber flavour than apple and as cucumber is alkaline and apple is not too acidic for a fruit it might be worth a look. Drinks with ginger in could also be useful as that is quite alkaline.

Adding in a few espressos at home as i am fond even if i can't have too many. Sainsburys have this on offer at the moment

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/gro ... offee-100g

£1.00 off so £2.50 at the moment and, for an instannt, it's really good too!
